The essay explains in part 1 the basic conflict in the debate about the admission of women to the priesthood. This is followed by an overview of the most important magisterial statements on the subject. Finally, theological-hermeneutical challenges are explained, including the question of what theological arguments can and cannot achieve in the present case. Part 2 develops a sacramental theological argument in favor of the significance of sex for the sacrament of priestly ordination. Convenance arguments are then presented which explain, supplement or support the sacrament-theological argument from different perspectives.
