The Contribution of Cardinal Charles Journet to the Teaching of Pope Paul VI about the Indulgences

This article examines Cardinal Charles Journet’s contribution to the drafting of Paul VI’s apostolic constitution Indulgentiarum doctrina. By comparing the constitution’s text, the conciliar draft De sacrarum indulgentiarum recognitione, and Journet’s own Théologie des indulgences, the study highlights the theological coherence between his reflections and the magisterial document. It also investigates the conciliar process that led to the document’s publication and offers a critical comparison between Journet’s and Karl Rahner’s approaches, emphasizing doctrinal divergences sometimes overlooked in previous scholarship.
